ICARO (2023)

A 60-minute opera based on real-life experiences that immerses audiences in the Roofer subculture, examining the extreme lifestyle of urban explorers. Featuring a soprano and a baritone, along with an instrumental ensemble and electronics, the work delves into the lives of influencers across post- Soviet countries and highlights generational conflict and forced adaptability to the harshness of an industrial landscape.

Commissioned by the Stuttgart State Opera in 2023 under a non-exclusive license, ICARO began as a micro-opera (creation supported by the Akademie Musiktheater Heute and the Lithuanian Cultural Commission) and was premiered by the Ensemble Modern in 2021 at Frankfurt LAB.

Commissioned by Wiener Festwochen and in partnership with the Vienna Klangforum’s ensemble, Philippe Quesne elegantly stages Gustav Mahler’s Song of the Earth (Das Lied von der Erde). This is a rare foray into a musical repertoire nostalgic of romanticism and cultivating an intimate bond to time and nature.
